Painting is an essential part of life for me. I find inspiration in some of the simplest things in life as well as in life's puzzles.
My recent work centers around two series: (1) Trinity: Finding Power, Spirit, and Serenity; and (2) Prose, Poetry & Passion.
One of the two is the Trinity (Gallery I) series. This series explores the trinity of power, spirit, and serenity with each piece representing a separate dominant quality. I believe that human beings have a need to find a place for each in our trek through life. There are times when one quality may be more necessary to see us through a certain part of our journey but in combination we may be able to fulfill our individual and collective purpose for being. Within the trinity series, the pieces under power tend to be bold and somewhat fearless in both composition and use of color. Many of these straddle a sometimes thin other times broad line between chaos and control. This tension is expressed through the use of both high key color and color complements. The pieces I create under the heading of spirit explores the foundation of our creative selves, the inner spring of ideas and inspiration. These pieces start with a quiet background and primary or elemental colors emerge, sometimes blending or making connections with one another through line and proximity, much like spanning synapses. When I explore the third quality, serenity, I am working the capture a place of peace and consonance. The artwork is more atmospheric and ambient. The colors are blended and/or somewhat muted on a textural background.
The second series, Prose, Poetry & Passion (Gallery II), is a collection of paintings featuring calligraphic writings inspired by my love for the written word. I don't remember the exact moment that I began to read as a child, but I know that since that time a book has never been far from my reach. In finding a place in my art for this particular passion, I was not merely inspired...I was compelled. The artwork features the written words of my favorite classic poets and writers whose work presently reside in the public domain. These include Lord Byron, Emily Dickinson, Archibald Lampman, William Butler Yeats, Pablo Neruda, Charles Dickens, Miguel de Cervantes, W.E.B DuBois, and others.

What this power is I cannot say; all I know is that it exists and it becomes available only when a man is in that state of mind in which he knows exactly what he wants and is fully determined not to quit until he finds it. Alexander Graham Bell
Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us. Wilma Rudolph

The final wisdom of life requires not the annulment of incongruity but the achievement of serenity within and above it. Reinhold Niebur
